Ego Ferguson (6’3 275) is a man on a mission. The ESPN 150 recruit recently transferred to Hargrave Military Academy to focus on his goal. That is not the only reason Ferguson transferred.
“My goal is to rise to the level of competition at this school,” said Ferguson. “I want to be considered the best player in the entire country. Playing against this competition of guys is going to make me become that.”
Luckily, Ferguson isn’t attending Hargrave for any academic troubles. Being one of the top players in the entire country also brings forth a ton of attention. Ferguson has a remarkable list of schools vying for his services. He currently holds over 40 offers from schools including Georgia, Notre Dame, USC and others.
“Recruiting is going pretty good,” said Ferguson. “No schools are really sticking out right now. USF just jumped on board and offered me.”
Before deciding upon Hargrave Academy, rumors were floating that he would be joining fellow Seminole commit Darious Cummings at Astronaut High School. Were those facts, or indeed rumors?
“It was just rumors,” said Ferguson. “My father and I were thinking about moving back to Florida. Nothing really came about it. If I did, we would have looked at playing at Astronaut.”
Where does this leave Ferguson and the possibility of suiting up for the Garnet and Gold?
“I like Coach Haggins a lot,” said Ferguson. “I want to come down for a visit. I don’t know if it will be for that camp (Seminole Showtime July 18th). If not, I will definitely come on an unofficial.”
Ferguson admitted that he does not have a list of top schools at this point. Ferguson also has no timetable on making a decision, but he did state his most important factors he is looking at for his future school.
“I really want a good business management school,” said Ferguson. “Another thing I am looking for is a good family environment.”
To conclude our conversation, I asked J.R. if he wanted to leave Seminole fans with a lasting quote. I left the topic to him to say anything that he wanted.
“Florida State speaks for itself,” said Ferguson. “They play the better competition and they have a great history. Their players make it.”
ESPN Evaluation
Ferguson looks the part as a high school prospect. He is a good-sized kid with a good build and bulk. He plays both from a two-point stance and with his hand on the ground in high school, but we feel the best fit for him in college is a defensive end. Displays a good get-off, though he can be a bit inconsistent at times. He is very good at using his hands. He will consistently bring them when taking on blocks and create and keep some separation. Plays with solid pad level, but does need to be sure and stay low. He is able to engage and blocker and stretch a play laterally. Flashes the ability to get into the gap and get some penetration. Plays with a solid motor and will pursue to the ball. He is a solid tackler. He can seem a bit rigid in his overall movement at times. As a pass rusher he can cause some problems off the edge. Will work to use his hands and can get up-field push when he gets to the shoulder of the blocker. Closes fairly well on the quarterback. Ferguson's raw size is enticing. He is a good-sized kid that could develop into a productive college end.
